Happy Birthday, Son Of Anarchy!

After so much talking about biker boots, it was time to put the biker look into practice. I chose this outfit to go out and celebrate my birthday, a few weeks ago. It wasn’t a crazy biker style party, but hey – you just can’t have everything… ;)

I began with a black second-hand sweater from Humana. I put it on and the first thing that came to my mind was a biker look. I tried to think of something else because I had the feeling I was getting too obsessed with the biker thing already… but I just couldn’t help it. The idea was still there and I had to deal with it…

Of course, you won’t be able to fully understand the dimension of my current biker obsession until I tell you a couple of things about Sons Of Anarchy. I discovered this TV-series a few weeks ago, and… hell, man! THAT’S it. This is probably the best thing that’s been aired on TV since the days of Queer As Folk, and it certainly has done a lot to increase my – already huge – interest in the biker world. Watch it, if you have a chance – it’s really worth it!

So, now you know this, I think it will be easier for you to understand why I just couldn’t get the biker idea out of my head. The first thing that came to my mind was, naturally, to pick up my (fake) worn-out jeans, my brand new black biker boots and, of course, this second-hand leather biker jacket I still hadn’t had a chance to use.

I completed the look with my second-hand leather cap, one of my dog chains and a pair of fingerless gloves.

When I saw myself in the mirror, I had the feeling that this was the kind of thing a 40-year-old rocker would wear in his “now I’m mature and sober” phase. It wasn’t a bad concept, for sure, but I still felt something was missing. I’m never this minimalistic!

I spent some time thinking about what else I could add to turn that cool look into a Deadly Bite look. Browsing through a magazine, I saw a pic of some Hollywood actress (it could have been Jessica Alba or maybe Cameron Diaz, or someone like that…) in a magazine, in what they called a “biker look”. She was wearing a pair of heavy boots, a leather jacket, some random T-shirt… and she had a scarf wrapped tightly around her neck that looked like a cervical collar. The elements weren’t particularly well combined, and the overall idea… well, there really wasn’t any overall idea. When I saw that, I said to myself: “OK, that’s what I DON’T want to look like”. A scarf definitively wasn’t a valid option. Or that’s what I thought…

Later that day, I came across this picture of Tom Kaulitz, and the first thing I saw was… yeah: his scarf. He was wearing a scarf as well, and it didn’t look bad at all. So I asked myself: “should I really give the scarf a chance, after all?”

Like so many times, the answer came from Tokyo Fashion. When I saw this look, I understood I just had no choice. If the world wanted me to wear a scarf so badly, I had to give it a try.

I picked up this particular scarf because it reminded me of another one of Tom’s scarves (it really has a very similar texture). I didn’t like the idea of just wrapping it around my neck in the Hollywood celebrity style, so I tried a few things… and I ended up tying it in a single knot and just letting it hang loose.

The scarf turned out to be way longer than I remembered, but that wasn’t a problem at all. I love the fact that it almost covers the sweater underneath. This was exactly the exaggerated detail I needed to break the overall sobriety of this outfit.

So, this is it. Of course, it wouldn’t be safe to ride a bike with such a long scarf hanging wild… but that will be our little secret ;)

Shopping #5: These Boots Are Made For Biking!

Wow! It looks like we’re almost going from one shopping post to another – from delayed Christmas straight to my birthday! Winter is the gift season for me, and I can’t really complain about it… :P

This time, it was all about shoes, and not just ordinary shoes….

I’ve already shared my love for biker/cowboy boots before, so this won’t really come as a surprise to you. However, I’m still proud to announce that my collection now has two new wonderful pieces ^^

They are all from Spanish brand New Rock. For what I’ve seen in their website, this brand specializes in making gothic/biker shoes and clothing. They all come in beautiful black boxes with silver lids, and their slogan says: “Above all be original” – which is certainly a sentence I could use as a subtitle for this blog! (LOL)

The first pair is almost plain black and really sober: no fancy details, no studs, no clasps… they’re just boots! Serious biker boots for serious bikers (:P). They have something that makes me think of a Harley Davidson just by looking at them. I think it must be the colour combination on that label…

The other pair is beige and it’s my most cowboy-looking pair of boots to date! The tips are even bent upwards! (LOL) They have a couple of really badass buckles on both sides that I just adore. Plus, their unusual colour opens the door to a brand new world of outfit possibilities…

These are not biker boots, obviously, but a glamorous pair of trainers. I used to have a beautiful pair of deep red Nike trainers with golden details (I still have it, but they are completely worn out now) that I’ve been trying to replace for ages. They had a very special quality: they looked casual, but not too sporty, so you could wear them outside PE class and actually make them part of an outfit. I still don’t know if this pair will be the definitive substitute, but it’s as close as I’ve got yet, and they have a bit of a skater/gangsta (but still elegant) look I just love :D

With this and a little bit of light reading, I guess I’m ready for long nights on the road… ;)

Red & Black Winter

This one here is probably my favourite winter outfit of all time. I created it sometime around 2007 (that’s when these pictures were taken) and I’ve worn it in numerous occasions ever since.

The core of this outfit was, of course, the red and black slightly oversized sweater. I got it at Kiabi back in 2005 (I did a huge winter shopping that year!), and it turned out to be one of my best purchases ever.

For me, the hardest thing about creating a winter outfit is managing to stay warm without allowing my clothes to get too heavy. I hate the idea of putting on layers and layers of random sweaters and long-sleeved T-shirts until I can barely move. It’s not comfortable and it sure doesn’t look great (even if only I know what’s going on underneath my ‘visible’ layer of clothes). I have to admit that it’s quite ironic to hear that from someone who comes from Siberia, but I hated it when I was a kid, and I still hate that now (LOL).

That’s exactly why I love this sweater so much: it’s warm and really light at the same time… and it’s not itchy!! Plus the extra-long sleeves serve as gloves too! :D

The rest of the outfit is quite simple, really (perhaps too simple for me LOL): black corduroy trousers, a black wool hat and an impressive bright red second-hand coat from Humana. I sometimes used to complete the looks with a red and black scarf (for extra cold days!), but it’s not really an integral part of it.

The overall look turned out to be genuinely bohemian. There’s something very 70s about it I love. I can almost see myself surrounded by an imaginary band of long-haired rockers in some of those pics! Of course, nobody would have worn these trainers back in those days… (LOL)

Red and black is a winner combination! I never get tired of saying it. And obviously, I’m not the only one who thinks that…

I was quite amused when I found this pic of Bill Kaulitz wearing… a red and black sweater! It’s a little bit thinner than mine, but I still wouldn’t mind adding it to my collection… However, this time I have to say I had mine first!

Shopping #4: Christmas!

It might be a little late for a Christmas Shopping post, but I’ve been so busy this month I haven’t been able to update the blog earlier (production tasks take away all of my time x__x). Anyway, here is a quick review of the clothes I got for Christmas – all second hand!

(As you might already know if you’ve been following this blog for a while, Humana is a gold mine for those of us who love finding unique and fancy clothes! :P).

1. A lovely hoodie with Mexican/tattoo motifs, much in the style of the artworks in The Offspring’s Ixnay On The Hombre. It immediately takes me to the golden age of skate punk, back in the early/mid ‘00s (my high school years :P). There’s a huge visual potential in this one… And the brand is called Demential Factory & Co.! LOL

 

 

2. Grunge sweater. Some of the tiny metallic details on the neck are missing, but we’ll eventually fix that up :P Aside from that, this sweater looks completely new. This is an interesting grunge/goth piece – something in the line of my all-time-favourite Scissorhands longsleeved T-shirt.

3. Texas Girl! LOL All right, this might look like something Dolly Parton might wear, but I’m pretty sure I will be able to give it a proper use in my own personal context! You might suspect that I’m going through some sort of cowboy phase, and you’re probably right… But let me tell you something: when you have a Quaintance calendar hanging in your room, everything related to the world of cowboys acquires a new meaning…

4. Buffalo Bill’s T-shirt ^^ Cowboy kitsch is one of my favourite things… ever! And this long-sleeved T-shirt has all these wonderful glittery details…! It’s a masterpiece.

5. This turtleneck is very ‘70s. It looks a little like a retro wallpaper, which is very much in the line of some of my small collection of op-art themed clothing.

6. Some fancy animal print. The bag and the umbrella are just freebies that came with a magazine, but they matched this piece so well I just had to get them in the pic (LOL). I can see a lot of Harajuku punk uses for this one…

 

Happy New Year!

I hope it’s not too late for a ‘Happy New Year’ post yet, because this is right what I bring you here :)

I have to admit I’ve got some curious issues with New Year’s Eve (just like I do with most festivities). I’m usually so buried in my work and my short-/mid-term objectives that I don’t even see it coming. I think I just prefer to ignore it, because I never really feel like I’m ready for the year to be over. So, suddenly I find myself on December 31 and all I can do is bang my head against the wall while lamenting: “OMG! I’m not prepared!”

That’s it. When the last day of the year comes, all I want to do is get in bed and sleep until everything is over. I hang around in a looser mood all day until I get to the point where I say to myself: “Come on! Go upstairs, get dressed and celebrate the f***in’ New Year!” LOL

This is exactly what happened this time.

When I started creating my outfit for New Year’s Eve I was in quite a lazy mood. Since I was going to stay at home, I didn’t really have the need to put on something special, but the thing with me is I just can’t wear whatever.

Creating an outfit is not just about combining clothes: it’s about rebuilding yourself from scratch in order to become exactly the person you want to be in that moment. At least, that’s the way I see it. I can’t feel right when I’m wearing a lazy outfit ‘cause that’s just not me.

However, deciding what to wear on such an occasion turned out to be a really hard job.

My starting idea had absolutely nothing to do with the look you’re seeing here. At first, I chose a very beautiful piece that turned out to be virtually impossible to combine. I hate it when that happens, but sometimes I have to give up on something, just because I can’t make it work… at least until I get my hands on that special something that will do the trick.

So, after having wasted about half an hour looking for a solution, I had to give up on sparkling electric blue and go back to black and purple. My Cowboy Musketeer outfit was still fresh in my mind, and I felt like I could experiment some more in that area. After all, it’s hard to imagine a more elegant and festive combination of colours than black, purple and a little bit of gold.

Just like with my previous outfit, I started from the trousers. At first sight, they might look identical to those, but they are not: these are corduroy trousers! (You can see how they reflect the light in quite a different way :P). However, they do belong to the same collection, so there’s an explanation for the similarities.

I was feeling quite helpless until The Dude (my housemate, personal shopper and photographer) suggested me to borrow this coat from her personal collection. I had no concept for the outfit yet, but I liked the fact that the coat was exactly the same wine colour as the trousers, and that gave me a starting point.

This coat is a very curious piece. On one hand, it calls out for some glamorous hippie-chic; on the other, I can’t help seeing it as a luxurious bathrobe (LOL) – the kind of thing you would expect a Lord to wear over his pyjamas.

That last part gave me an idea…

Instead of focusing on creating a bohemian look (that wouldn’t have felt much like New Year’s Eve anyway), I had a crazy flash of some sort of Al Capone that was staying at home for the evening – wearing a bathrobe over his gangster suit. It sounded so bizarre it definitively had to work!

Immediately, I picked up the dandiest blazer I could find (I have so many I can’t even hang them properly anymore x__x) and I loved the result. The shoes and the hat came along automatically.

I had a slightly harder time picking up what to wear underneath the blazer (I always seem to have that same problem T__T). A shirt would have been the logical choice, but I wanted something slightly more festive and a little less obvious than the classical gangster shirt.

My golden turtleneck turned out to be the perfect choice.

I put on my black Chinese inspired waistcoat in order to add some structure to the central part of the outfit (and to make it even dandier! LOL) and the bow tie gave it the perfect finishing touch.

The result has definitively some Carnival/cabaret feel to it. The way I see it, this character is an Al Capone who’s having a little bit too much fun playing the role of Marlene Dietrich – but all is allowed in Carnival, right? ;)

I’ve never been a big fan of retro, but I guess inspiration always comes from the most unexpected places… and the funny part is that this coat has something that reminds me of the wide-lapeled coats that were fashionable in the 1930s.

Oh, and don’t miss my glittery purple leopard print socks! ;)

As you can imagine, these pics were taken on New Year’s Eve, so you might see me doing slightly more stupid things than usual. I hope you will excuse me… LOL

You may also see some spontaneous flying hair from time to time. It was a windy night!

Anyway, the important thing is that I finally got over my New Year’s Eve depression and managed it to have a great time :)

I guess there’s nothing that a funny creative outfit can’t fix ^^
